OUR Founding

The Serra Preschool opened its doors with a small group of children in the Pacific Heights home of Bill and Marjorie Campbell on September 11, 2001.

The Campbells collaborated with Marybeth Cody, who remains our Director today, to create a unique preschool experience which combines a play-based philosophy with a nurturing environment to encourage a child’s natural spiritual curiosity.

the big move

The Serra Preschool moved to its current location in The Presidio to accommodate the growth in the program. The natural beauty of the setting and direct access to nature provides a rich, additional dimension to the program.

As of 2017, The Serra Preschool has graduated over 1,100 students, preparing them for private independent schools and parochial schools  across San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

our approach

Our founders, director and our community of teachers and parents believe in the value of experiential curriculum with a purpose.

The school’s philosophy is premised upon the belief that each child is a unique individual. Every child brings her or his own special qualities and experiences to the school. The preschool staff seeks to develop and promote each child’s self-esteem, and their awareness of and their responsibility for themselves, for one another and for their shared world.

Our teachers cultivate all of a child’s abilities: social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual. Stories and materials reflecting Christian roots of holidays such as Christmas and Easter are also shared with the children.

Our curriculum reflects Roman Catholic traditions and embraces the value of developing virtues such as kindness, generosity, sharing, empathy, and forgiveness.
